Algarve
The Algarve's sparkling coastline combines sugary sandy beaches, tranquil countryside and sleepy white-washed villages with a blend of culture - perfect for a relaxing holiday. With over a hundred miles of gorgeous beaches, all year round sunshine, scattered remains of Roman palaces and Moorish influences, the Algarve is perfect for an idyllic holiday.
With its warm air currents and gently shelving beaches, the Algarve has drawn visitors to its sun-drenched shores for years. The coastline is simply beautiful - long stretches of golden sands, red sandstone cliffs and secluded delightful bays are washed by refreshing seas. For a more up-tempo holiday, jeep safaris, water safaris glimpsing dolphins, sailing, horse riding, golf and watersports are in abundance, while scented wooded hills offer beautiful walking terrain. Whatever you want to do, you can create your own trips, beginning your adventure by the coast, where ancient fishing villages climb up into beautiful countryside, sprinkled with carob and almond trees. Make for the hills with a picnic and stumble upon hidden treasures as you wander through olive groves and terracotta-roofed hamlets. Or simply spend your days winding down, lazily lapping up the sun, sifting sand between your toes as you listen to the soft surf wash the shores.
Away from the coast, sleepy towns and villages decorate lush hillsides and offer a fascinating insight into Portuguese culture while the developed seafront resorts brim with bars, cafes, restaurants, night clubs and shops. The Algarve basks in glorious summer temperatures, moderated by refreshing Atlantic breezes. From the high cliffs in the west, watch the breakers crashing on the rocky headlands. Look out also for majestic clifftop forts that once guarded the coast, and isolated lighthouses still guiding ships safely on their way.
With Moorish-influenced architecture of eye-catching old churches, 15th century slave market and sandstone castle, handmade lace, embroidery, woollens and Moorish-style ceramics, there's plenty of atmosphere and culture to soak up.
